This dreamy sculpture was hand-carved from a natural, cracked and soured birch knot, which gives it a character and soul that is completely out of the ordinary. These unique wooden pieces have their own history, marked by natural influences such as fungal attacks, insects and other wildlife. The traces they leave behind can create beautiful and unique patterns, which give character and soul to the wood. When working with such materials, it is also a form of respect for nature and its processes, and it can be challenging but rewarding to see how you can transform something old and worn into something new and beautiful. The original plan for this project was to carve out a bowl, but this piece of wood wanted it differently and Søvnheimspeil was eventually carved out in its glory.

The name "Søvnheimspeil" means "Mirror of the Home of Sleep", and it invites the viewer to reflect on their own dreams and inner thoughts.

The surface of Søvnheimspeil is carefully polished to achieve a smooth and pleasant texture, before being treated with five coats of oil. This process not only preserves the unique properties of the wood, but also highlights the beautiful pattern and varying play of colors that only the passage of time can create.

The sculpture is elegantly placed on a rustic pedestal made from a 180-year-old support beam from an old shipyard, which gives a timeless feel and strengthens the connection between nature and history. The floating effect, achieved through a discreet steel rod, gives the impression that Søvnheimspeil floats in space, as if in constant dialogue with its surroundings.
